A lovely first year flowering Salvia, with spikes of deep blue flowers from July to September/October. The flowers grow on strong stalks up to 60cm tall, and have an intense blue colour that contrasts well with other s in a border. These are also good in gravel and Mediterranean gardens. They attract bees and butterflies into the garden. Mealy Cup Sage grows best in sun to part shade and a wide range of well-drained soils. A position in well-drained soil helps these s survive the winter, as they are on the edge of hardiness. They grow as perennials in warmer UK gardens. However, they flower in the first year from seed, so make good annuals. Salvia takes good cuttings. Sow in spring in a tray of seed compost, keep at a constant 20°C and germination takes 1-3 weeks.
