Product Description ------------------- Earnshaw watches collection of men's swiss made timepieces have been aptly named Longcase 43 in re of the clock made by 18th century British horologist, Thomas Earnshaw. Already famed for his work on the marine chronom and also a professional watchmaker, Thomas Earnshaw was flattered to be asked by the English Astronomer Royal, Nevil elyne, to produce a clock or the Observatory in Armagh, Ireland. Earnshaw took the challenge on of producing the clock and in doing so; he created a masterpiece that was for many years the single most accurate timekeeping device in the world. This clock incorporated Earnshaw's design of escapement and had a number of novel features including an air-tight case designed to reduce dust and draughts. Combining principles precision and workmanship never before seen in clock making and an ingenious use of barom to help adjust necessary compensations in timekeeping the Pendulum Clock in Armagh is an absolute testament to the skill, craftsmanship and artistry in the work of Thomas Earnshaw. It was highly praised by John Thomas Romney Robinson in the 19th century who at that time believed it to be one of the most accurate clock in the world. In 1794, its purchase price was GBP100 and Earnshaw charged GBP100 to travel with it to Armagh and set it up in the new Observatory. After that, although strictly a watchmaker, Earnshaw embraced the challenge of developing clocks for use in Observatories such as those in Greenwich and Armagh and further examples of his exquisite work can be seen in museums and auction houses around the world.
