The BAFTA award winning comedy, written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, makes a welcome return to DVD just in time for Christmas. After a triple success at last year’s British Comedy Awards and triumph at The South Bank Show Awards, the second series of Gavin & Stacey is released on 10th November. Gavin is an ordinary boy from England, Stacey is an ordinary girl from Wales. After speaking on the phone to each other every day at work - they finally met, fell in love and got married. Now in Series 2, the honeymoon's over for the newlyweds, and their married life begins in earnest at the Shipman family home in Essex. But, as the reality of living so far away sinks in, Stacey starts missing her home in Barry Island along with her mum and her Uncle Bryn. Meanwhile, Gavin and Stacey's best friends, Smithy and Nessa, are coming to terms with their own stark reality: they're not even friends and yet they're having a baby together! Screen favourites Rob Brydon and Alison Steadman join an outstanding cast in this contemporary comedy about young romance. Mathew Horne (Catherine Tate, Roman’s Empire, Teachers) and Joanna Page (Gideon’s Daughter, Love Actually) star as Gavin and Stacey, Ruth Jones (Little Britain, Nighty Night) as the forthright and tattooed Nessa, and BAFTA award winner James Corden ( Friends, History Boys) as the blokes’ bloke Smithy. Julia Davis (Nighty Night) and Sheridan Smith (Love Soup, Two Pints Of Lager and A Packet of Crisps) also make guest star appearances. The DVD contains the entire second series plus a wealth of extras including 'An In into The Making of Story of Series 2' with an exclusive interview with Ruth and James, outtakes, James and Ruth on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross and audio commentaries on selected episodes. From .co.uk ----------- The first series of Gavin and Stacey brought the show richly-deserved BAFTA re, and left the two title characters married by the time it came to an end. Series two picks things up from there, as they settle into married life, and the challenges that ultimately brings. Never forgetting its comedic roots, Gavin and Stacey now follows the pair, and the collection of characters around them, as they adjust to married life. It doesn’t take, for instance, for Stacey’s homeness to kick in, while the programme also takes time to spend time with their friends, Nessa and Smithy, as they too evaluate their relationship (and impending baby!). In lesser hands, Gavin and Stacey’s ingredients could easily go sour. But thanks to some terrific scripting, and quite exceptional performances, it gels superbly well. Much of the credit should go, of course, to Mathew Home and Joanna Page’s endearing performances in the title roles, as well as James Corden and Ruth Jones for their exceptional writing work (the pair also play the aforementioned Nessa and Smithy in the show). Eschewing gimmicks and cheap lines in favour of three dimensional characters and genuine laughs, Gavin and Stacey is a television gem, and one that deserves to find a wider audience.
